About us

Welcome to Peacocks. We are a family business: we set up the tea-room in our home overlooking the river nearly ten years ago. Starting with just one room and the pretty front garden, like Topsy it ‘growed’, taking in first our family kitchen, and then the hall. So, if it has a homely feel to it there is a good reason for that.

We offer cream teas, hot dishes, salads and sandwiches all day, and all freshly prepared to order.  It’s not ‘fast food’ and sometimes, especially busy days in the summer, there may be a bit of a wait for the food. It could probably be done quicker, and cheaper, but it wouldn’t be as good. Our tea-list is certainly unique – nowhere else in the world are you offered teas from every continent.

We’re proud that the Tea Guild, in their annual awards in April 2013 again gave us an Award of Excellence – the eighth year running, counting the time they declared us the best tea-place in the country. The Times newspaper has listed us in their top 5 places to have tea, and Country Living magazine named us their favourite tearoom, so we have a lot to live up to. We keep looking for ways to improve.

If you have never been, let's hope you have the opportunity soon. We look forward to seeing old and new friends.

Scones and tea like nanna used to make! Tucked into the back of the Irish Design Shop in Sydney’s historical Rocks area is our hidden gem; our quaint tea room serving delicious scones baked fresh on premises all day.

All our tea is loose leaf and served in pots. Which hand-made tea cosy will arrive on yours? Come and join us for an old fashioned devonshire tea in our 180 year-old heritage-listed building.

The Food

Using an old secret family recipe we make all our scones by hand from scratch each morning. We use only Australian-made gourmet jams and serve the scones with real double thickened cream.

The Tea

Our tea is served loose leaf in pots, adorned with beautiful hand-made tea cosies, and set with beautiful tea cups.

The Family

We are an Irish-Australian family-run business. We opened the Irish Design Shop (in which The Tea Cosy is located) 28 years ago, and opened the doors of the tea room in 2005.

The Building

We are lucky enough to be located in a stunning 1870s heritage-listed building. It was originally a military residence for officers and is a fine example of early colonial living (but beware; it is haunted!).

The Vision

To serve beautiful old style devonshire tea using old-fashioned methods with the best quality ingredients and sides, just like nanna used to make.
